Regarding a state audit criticizing the recent property tax hike and other budget-related matter, Ryan said of the responsibilities of town supervisor, “it isn’t an easy job” and Welch “is the right person for it." While Everwilde is a big issue for the town, some said it was not the biggest motivator for them personally in choosing who they wanted to lead the town.īill Ryan, who lives in Bristol Harbour, said he voted for Welch because he believes she is bringing consistency to town operations. Outside the polling place, some shared their thoughts about this year’s election and what influenced their vote. On Tuesday afternoon, the South Bristol Town Hall parking lot was busy with voters coming and going. Town Board member James Bachman, who lost his bid for another term, said earlier on Tuesday he would not comment. McDonald, a newcomer to town politics, was at Town Hall for the election results and then quickly left. While heavily criticized for a tax rate increase, Welch said the town is now in better fiscal shape as the current board has followed state recommendations and put in place much needed changes to the way the town does business. Welch, who had sought a second term, was not at Town Hall but said later when reached by phone that she is proud of her work and the work of her board. He is most focused on the town resuming leadership under Marshall and the others who won, he said. While he would rather not see the property rezoned for a commercial purpose, he said he thinks an inn and spa could be beneficial for the area. Marshall said he raised $1,657.65 most of it was paid by the six Common Sense party line candidates.įormer Town Board member Dale Stoker, who lives a few doors from the proposed Everwilde property, said he isn’t strongly opposed to the project. Both McDonald and Welch received contributions from the same outspoken Everwilde supporters. Welch raised $4,274.91 from 52 donations, all from donors in the area. McDonald raised $5,172.50 from six different donors, four of whom live out of state. “People were also concerned with how much money was being funneled into other campaigns." “But as time went on, we could squarely see that Everwilde and the rezoning issue was a big concern, as well,” Goodwin said. The current Town Board under Welch hiked the property tax rate 113 percent, an issue addressed in a recent state audit that criticized current as well as past fiscal management. If he had to vote today on the rezoning needed for Everwilde, Marshall said he would vote against it. But in the race with incumbent Barbara Welch and retired Ontario County Sheriff’s investigator Matt McDonald, Marshall was the only candidate to express strong reservations about the project. On the question of how the controversial Everwilde Inn and Spa proposal might have influenced voters, Marshall said he couldn’t say.
